Guy Pépin, Marc Simard, Yves Carignan and Marc-André LeChasseur are among the top practitioners in their respective fields named this year in the 118^th edition of Canadian Best Lawyers, released on Thursday, August 24, 2023. Their inclusion honours the exceptional talent of the firm’s team and reflects its commitment to the highest legal standards.

Best Lawyers is recognized for its rigorous peer-review process. For every 100 lawyers in private practice, only 3 are honoured by Best Lawyers, a testament to the high standards of the distinction. Founded in the USA in 1981 by Pulitzer Prize winners Gregory White Smith and Steven Naifeh, Best Lawyers has since been extended worldwide. Since its first edition in 1983 in the United States and in 2006 in Canada, Best Lawyers is now present in 76 countries, highlighting legal professionals distinguished by their skills and commitment.

“A tribute to all those who are awarded the distinction”

Guy Pépin, member of the Bar since 1959 and counsel at Bélanger Sauvé since 2002, has been recognized since the very first edition of Best Lawyers for his practice in insurance law and liability. At the time, the prolific career of this lawyer renowned for outstanding litigation skills had already earned him numerous honours, including admission to the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers, a rare distinction for a Canadian lawyer. Over the course of his career, Mtre Pépin has served as President (Bâtonnier) of the Quebec Bar, President of the Federation of Canadian Legal Professionals and President of the International Commission of Jurists. He was also awarded the Médaille du mérite by the Barreau du Québec, which also awarded him the honorary title of Advocatus Emeritus.” Being included in Best Lawyers, is a tribute to all those on the list, whether they are well-known, acclaimed or only newly identified,” noted Mtre Pépin.

“The legal community’s recognition of a lawyer’s expertise is the consecration of the work of an entire team, added Mtre Marc-André LeChasseur, included on the list since 2017 for his practice in municipal law. This view is shared by Mtre Yves Carignan, who was added to the 2021 Best Lawyers list in recognition of his insurance law practice. A lawyer for over 30 years, he is an experienced litigator and negotiator. “I’m proud to be awarded this distinction, but above all I’m humbled, because I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some outstanding mentors and colleagues, he said. I share this recognition with the team of which I am proud to be a member.”

Marc Simard has been on the list since 2008 for his renowned expertise in class actions. Mtre Simard’s practice, which spans more than 40 years, focuses primarily on commercial litigation, construction law, public law, professional law and agri-food law. Over the course of his career, he has defended over 40 class action claims.
